Politics
D.K. Shivakumar began his political journey in the early 1980s as a student leader and gradually rose through the ranks of the Congress party. In 1989, at the age of 27, he won his first election representing the Sathanur constituency in Mysuru district. He was re-elected in the 1994, 1999, and 2004 assembly elections from the same constituency. He won subsequent assembly elections in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023 from the Kanakapura constituency .
Saving Maharashtra Congress Government
In 2002, Shivakumar played a crucial role in saving Maharashtra’s Congress Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh during a no-confidence motion by gathering all the Congress legislators at a Bengaluru resort before safely returning them to Mumbai for the trust vote .
